"An
Actor's Life For Me" -pinnochio
My
thoughts on theatre
by
Shawna
Why
Theatre?
|
 |
Why?
It is an addiction... I can't imagine not doing it. Ahh... the lights,
laughter, tears, and to become someone else. I love theater both as observer
and performer. You'll hear most aspiring actors say they want to break
into film. I am different. I want to act, sing, dance, stand, sleep, or
maybe live on stage.
|
|
I
don't want to just wade in the pool but dive in and submerge myself. There
is an instant gratification in theater that is hard to be manipulated in
film. The instant reaction of knowing it's affecting an audience and touching
their souls. Theater to me is an example of life in your lap. It does not
matter if it is a drama, comedy, musical, or whatever the context.

It's falling in love all over again, or as in Pippin discovering who you
are. An intensity in experiencing human emotion. In some realms it's discovering
emotions you never knew were possible. My professor said sometimes you
just feel you couldn't do anything else and live. I agree and had goose
bumps when he described it... it was me!
|
 |
I
can compare it to a natural high. A happiness I can't explain. When I am
on stage I feel at home. When I am in the seat watching; I am salivating
wanting to jump up there with them. When I write I see character, big picture,
and just a greater power to communicate. As an actress I tend to be put
in larger than life characters.
|
 |
I
have and am exploring realism too. I have played a southern belle hussy...
all the way to now playing a Beaver for children's theater. Those are more
comedic. Serious roles are from a murderous mother to a director of a play
that is dominating. I love any role. My least favorite was Blanche in street
car named desire.
|
 |
My
Stanley died right before we performed. It was for a class, but the class
was "putting on a play." Till this day I hear his voice when I hear any
lines from that play. My favorite role... hmm that's a hard one? Oh, maybe
playing a singer in a nightclub? That was fun and had dancing.
|
 |
Right
now I am Medea from Euripides. I also am in The Lion, The Witch, and The
Wardrobe as Mr. Beaver. These are college roles. I wrote my own play about
overcoming and healing from abuse. I absolutely love writing and though
it was hard and draining... directing was great.

If
you want to check it out, I have my review on the site. I am hoping to
turn in the script to other theaters for Playwright contests.
My
favorite plays are Godspell, Les Mis, and Miss Saigon.
|
 |
My
goal is to touch someone in someway through theater. I hope my gifts as
an actor can give someone else. I want them to relate to a character's
joy. To fall in love all over again with my role. Maybe they'll shed the
tears you cry when you have your first heartbreak all over again. It's
a vehicle of communicating on a deeper level. I think America is in a time
where people learn with visuals. We watch tv, go to movies, the list goes
on. In my church they even use drama so people can visualize the message.

5 things to remember in acting:
1. Always
give it your all!
2. Commit
to the role.
3. Find
a reason to love your character.
4. You
can always be emotionally talked down, but it's hard - next to impossible
- to give energy to an actor. So have energy!
5. Go
in and give it your all. |
